Adding To The WorkStorm Archive

Yes, you too can have your fan fiction archived here! But if you do want your fiction to be archived here, consider carefully before you ask.

  • If you have an idealogical objection to public reviews, you probably don't wish to be associated with me. Just because someone is archived here, don't think I would show any partiality in my reviews.
  • If you write slash or adult stories, think twice. I will never archive slash or adult stories, and if you want all your stories to be in the same place, you're out of luck here. (What do I mean by "adult"? Well, if it isn't suitable for someone who isn't allowed to drink, drive, or vote, then it's probably adult. Think movie ratings.)
  • There is also a minimal standard here; if you don't use a beta-reader, then go and join fanfiction.net.

The good news is that this archive is not fandom-specific; I figure if Jack Heston could make Knightrider look good then any fandom can have good stories written for it.

Joining the Archive

This archive is now run so that authors have their own space in the archive, and can upload their own stories. The process is as follows:

  • Ask the Archivist for an account. In your initial mail, give your preferred name/nom-de-plume, and your preferred login id (which needs to be all lowercase).
  • The Archivist will set up your account, including the area for your stories. For example, the area for the Archivist's stories is Fiction-Stories-KathrynAndersen. You will also be given an id and a password.
  • You can then start uploading your stories!

Using the Archive

This archive is based on a wiki system. All the information is based on editable pages, with nifty things going on in the background to create the indexes and cross-references.

  1. Log in (by clicking on the cleverly hidden "Login" button on the top right of the window). You will be prompted with a login window, where you type your id and password.
  2. Go to your author area. This is where you put your stories.

Adding a New Story

To add a new story, you first need to create a story-info page for it. Type the title of the story (or a shorter version of it) without any punctuation, in the "Add New Story" box, and click on the button. This will give you an edit window with a partially filled-in template. You need to fill in the information about the story there. One of the fields is the "File:" field. That field is pre-filled with Attach:newfile.html; you need to replace "newfile.html" with the name of the file you want your story to be uploaded to (no spaces in the filename). When you save the page, you can then click on the Attach: link and you will go to a form where you can upload your story file. If your story has more than one file associated with it, then just make an Attach: link for each file.

File Format

I talk above about uploading story files, but didn't say what format they are required to be in. That's because there is less restriction on the format than there used to be. It can be any kind of HTML or plain text, it can be PDF, it can even be graphics files, if you want. What you put there will be what the readers see.

Footnote:
"Kronos" by Jack Heston was a good Knightrider story in the venerable multimedia fanzine Syndicated Images #3 (back issues available from Entropy Express at Discovered On A Web Page).
