Troubled young Fawn Bluefield seeks a life beyond her family's farm. Dag Redwing is a Lakewalker patroller weighted down by past sorrows and onerous present responsibilities. Little do they know that, very soon, their fates will be entangled.
This is the first book in the Sharing Knife series. I'm re-reading it in preparation for reading Book 4 (in a series that was initially plugged as being two books long. Oh well). I think I like this one the best, because it introduces the characters, brings them together, makes them fall in love and overcome obstacles to be together. Or possibly because it feels a bit more of a happy ending at the end of this book, because we don't know the troubles which will happen in Book 2.
I really like this; I love the two main characters, and I love the world-building. It isn't your cardboard-cutout descendent of Tolkien that so many fantasy writers churn out. I like how we don't know everything, how we learn more, how the characters learn more about the world they are in.
